Developing Algebraic Thinking – An investigative approach – Age 11+

What is ‘algebraic thinking’? Although there does not appear to be one agreed-upon definition, several common threads appear:

• exploring and conjecturing about patterns
• formalising patterns
• verbalising relationships
• making generalisations
• symbolising relationships
• working with functions
• making connections between real-world situations and algebraic statements

Together, all these interrelated components form a framework for algebraic thinking. This book presents a resource that will allow teachers to engage their students in active exploration of components of algebra, helping to formulate a solid foundation for understanding algebra.
