Full of funny, suspenseful, horrifying and exciting texts, Primary comprehension is an educational adventure students won’t want to end! With a wide array of literal, inferential and applied comprehension questions, this series is essential for every teacher’s collection. Each book contains twenty different texts from a variety of genres. These include humour, fantasy, a myth/legend, folktale, mystery, adventure, horror/supernatural, fairytale, play, fable, science fiction, poetry and informational texts/nonfiction such as as a timetable, letter, report, procedure, poster, map, program, book cover and cartoon.

Three levels of questions are used to indicate the reader's comprehension of each text.

  • Literal questions ('Right there') are those which can be found directly in the text. These come first in the questions and are grouped.
  • Inferential questions ('Think and search') follow the literal questions. Inferential questions are implied in the text and require the reader to think a bit more deeply about what had just been read.
  • Applied questions ('On my own') require the reader to think even further about the text and incorporate his/her personal experiences and knowledge to answer.

One or more particular comprehension strategies has been chosen for practice with each text. Rarely does a reader use a single strategy to comprehend a text. The strategies included in these books are predicting, making connections, comparing, sensory imaging, determining importance, skimming, scanning, synthesising and paraphrasing/summarising.
