Sir Paulias Matane CMG, OBE is without doubt one of Papua New Guinea's finest sons. He is a member of a pioneering generation of Papua New Guineans, born and brought up in communities which had undergone remarkably little change after almost 50 years of German and Australian rule.

The son of a pastor, Ilias Matane, the 15 year old Paulias was among the first children to attend a Methodist Mission school established in Viviran after World War II. This education set him on the path to national and international success. Leader, writer, philosopher, diplomat, businessman and philanthropist, Sir Paulias Matane will find an important place in the annals of Papua New Guinean history.
