Wittgenstein on Logic as the Method of Philosophy

The book discusses key methodological innovations developments in the history of analytic philosophy, seeking to open up covered up paths for further development of this approach as originally conceived. In it Oskari Kuusela examines Wittgenstein's early and late philosophies of logic, explaining how Wittgenstein further develops the philosophies of logic of Frege and Russell in both his early and later work by seeking to resolve their problems and limitations. This involves rethinking the nature of logic and the introduction of a variety of new logical methods. These novel methods make it possible for logic to do justice to the complexity and richness of language use and thought while retaining the discipline's ideals of rigour, exactness and simplicity. In addition, a new kind of non-empiricist naturalism is outlined in this volume, one that makes it possible for logic to take into account the natural history of humans and language use instead of treating language and thought as abstract entities. The long-standing dispute between the ideal language and ordinary language schools of analytic philosophy is therefore resolved.
